What is the GeneSight Psychotropic test?

The GeneSight Psychotropic test is a pharmacogenomic test that analyzes certain genetic variations that may influence how your body processes and responds to some psychiatric medications.

The results can provide your healthcare provider with additional information to consider when selecting or adjusting medications for conditions such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, and other mental health conditions.

GeneSight testing may help identify medications that, based on your genetic information:

  • May require a different dose or closer monitoring
  • May be less likely to be well tolerated or effective
  • May have a higher likelihood of certain side effects or medication-related concerns
Testing is one part of the treatment process. Symptoms, medical history, current medications, previous treatment experiences, possible drug interactions, and individual treatment goals remain important when making medication decisions. Test results do not diagnose a condition or identify which medication will work best.

Is GeneSight testing right for you?

Pharmacogenomic testing may be worth discussing if:

A mental health medication has not worked as expected in the past.
Your current medication is not providing the improvement you are hoping for.

What does the testing process look like?

    Schedule an appointment

    When scheduling, let the office know that you are interested in discussing GeneSight testing.

    Provide a simple cheek swab

    A small sample is collected from the inside of your cheek using a swab and sent to the laboratory for analysis.

    Review your results

    Once the results are available, schedule a follow-up appointment to review them with Kristi.

    Develop an individualized treatment plan

    Results are considered alongside your symptoms, treatment history, current medications, and personal goals.
